Eye Magazine-Sept.9/99
PARTS UNKNOWN Airshow Dot-Dash **** Parts Unknown want their apocalypse now, but even as Airshow traverses thick clouds of smoke, smog and radiation, there's still a feeling of romance in the air. Perfect for long, intimate walks on the beach beneath the glow of mushroom clouds, Airshow counteracts its cryogenic Krautrock/post-punk fusion by exploring humanity's greatest fears -- love and death, though singer Derek Westerholm isn't sure which makes him more nervous. In this context, the sweet, suicide-pact jangle-pop of "Last Incarnation" is just as unnerving as the PiL-popping doom of "The 5th Sun," because this is the way the world ends for Parts Unknown: not with a bang, but with a kiss. -- STUART BERMAN see review online at: http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_09.09.99/music/ondisc.html |
